What is shot blasting?
Shot blasting, also referred to as "shot peening", is a process we utilize here in our shop to texture the surface of metal objects for aesthetics purposes. Shot peening is commonly done by using air blast systems. This is the type of system we use here in our shop. Air blast systems use high pressure air to fire the round steel shots through a nozzle at the workpiece with enough force to create indentations. When a constant flow of round steel shots impact the surface they generate multiple indentations, resulting in the consistent texturing effect. Depending on the size of the shot used. The process can leave different texturing effects ranging from fine to course.
Why do we offer shot blasting?
Initially we saw the need to texture repaired/welded motorcycle engine castings. Many times we would see parts come through our shop that had been welded and sanded smooth. Yet the repaired work was still obvious to the eye and remained visible after powder coating. We wanted the ability to match and mimic their factory OEM casting finish and ultimately hide the repair area. Additionally, the advantages of shot peening include improved strength and fatigue resistance, while also helping to resist the development and propagation of cracks. Making it an excellent finishing step when repairing cracked welded motorcycle engine cases.
Where is shot blasting used?
Common applications would be texturing molds, refinishing welded and repaired motorcycle engine castings. Any application where an aesthetic textured finish is desired.
